The chief advisor says Pfizer vaccine is causing more allergies than expected

The Chief Science Advisor for Operation Warp Speed, a U.S. government initiation to facilitate and accelerate the development, production, and distribution of COVID-19 countermeasures, said Pfizer-BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine is being causing more allergic reactions than expected.

Dr Moncef Slaoui said he was updated on six cases of allergic reactions to the vaccine on Tuesday and said the frequency “is higher than what would be expected with other vaccines.” He also pointed out that data on COVID-19 immunizations lags behind the real numbers.

According to Dr Slaoui, vaccine manufacturers and the National Institutes of Health are engaged in discussions to consider conducting clinical trials in highly allergic populations. He said the study could help understand the rate of allergic reactions and what causes them.

Recently, the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research held a meeting to discuss the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, including a study in which four cases of Bell’s palsy were reported between the vaccinated group and none in the placebo group. After reviewing the findings, the FDA said there was “no clear basis on which to conclude a causal relationship” between the vaccine and the onset of Bell’s palsy.
