The team chose to enter with six batters in formation. Wriddhiman Saha received the nod as the wicket keeper for the first try. There has been speculation as to who will play the first Test as a wicket-keeper after Rishabh Pant scored a century in the second inning of the pink ball practice game.

Prithvi Shaw received the nod in front of Shubman Gill as an opener alongside Mayank Agarwal in the first Test. The 21-year-old Gill had impressed in the two training matches played for the Indians. In the second training match played with the pink ball, Gill recorded scores of 43 and 65 against Australia A.
On the other hand, Prithvi Shaw has faced a good deal of criticism from greats such as Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border. The two legendary batters had echoed Shaw’s sentiment that he played too many shots in Test cricket.

Earlier in the day, skipper Kohli had spoken at a press conference where he talked about youngsters like Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw in the flank. Speaking of Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw, Kohli said: “Shubman hasn’t had an opportunity at this level in Test cricket yet, as and when he gets the opportunity, it would be interesting to see how he performs because he’s a very confident young man. Prithvi has performed at the test level but will play in Australia for the first time. I think it’s also very exciting to see his progress.
“Mayank did well here the last time he came during the 2018-19 series. It’s exciting to have young guys on the field, you can literally tell them to enjoy their skills in between.” He added.
The first Test of the series, a pink ball competition, will start on December 17th in Adelaide. Australia had won the ODI series while the Men in Blue had won honors in the T20I series.
