In a setback for Kamal Haasan ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Secretary General Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) In Arunachalam on Friday he joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Prakash Javedkar. Arunachalam, a founding member of the MNM, said he made the decision after Haasan refused to support the Centre’s agricultural laws.

Speaking to reporters, Arunachalam said he felt lucky to be attending the saffron festival on the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Interior Minister Amit Shah formulated these three agricultural laws. Coming from a peasant family, I know the advantages. When I urged my leader and the party’s high command to support the Centre’s decision, they refused, ”Arunachalam said.

“On several occasions I told them not to view the laws as an initiative of the BJP but as something the Center had devised for the welfare of farmers. I told them that I am a centrist party and if they don’t support the government’s decision, there won’t be much difference between them and the opposition. But they continued to oppose the decision, “he added.

Arunachalan said he could “no longer exist in a party that acts against the welfare of the peasants”.

An earlier version of this article stated that Arunachalam was vice president of MNM. The mistake is sorry.
