The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed its indictment on Friday against four accused in the alleged gangrape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras of Uttar Pradesh. The indictment sheet indicates that the victim was attacked and killed by the accused. The court of Hathras will now preside over the trial.

The charge sheet was filed under sections 354, 376 A, 376 D and 302 of the IPC and the SC ST law.

The Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four upper caste men in Hathras on 14 September. She died on September 29 at Safdarjung hospital in Delhi during treatment.

The victim was cremated in the middle of the night near his home on September 30th. Her family said they were forced by the local police to hastily conduct her final rites. Local police officers, however, said the cremation was carried out “according to the wishes of the family”.

More details awaited
