Frank Lampard is confident that Mikel Arteta believes it is only a matter of time before Mikel Arteta reverses Arsenal’s fortunes and has hinted that it would be premature for the club to sack the Arsenal boss under fire.

The Spaniard is holding on to his job just four months after devising Arsenal’s FA Cup triumph against Chelsea at Wembley. The Gunners are just four points above the relegation zone ahead of Saturday’s Boxing Derby against the Blues still hoping to win a title challenge.

Chelsea have recovered from consecutive losses to Everton and Wolves to get their campaign back on track with a win over West Ham, but Lampard expects a real test of his side’s credentials against an Arsenal side he believes are in A false position at the moment.

He told Sky Sports: ‘Expectations are higher in clubs like the ones we both manage, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he’s a young manager.

I see him as a very talented manager and we have seen examples of clubs that have built really strong teams over the past three or four years.

The dominant teams at that time, Manchester City and Liverpool, had time to work and improve the squad.

‘They went through difficult times and had time to improve in those moments. It is only then that you really get to know the players, the team and the squad as a whole. I’m not talking specifically about Mikel here, but just generally in the Premier League.

If you join a club that is going through some transition period, I think it is very understandable that there will be a lot of situations and work that you will have to do to get the club where you want it to be. It’s not all plain sailing because it’s not football.

“It has nothing to do with the manager. I think Mikel is a very talented coach and manager, and his team is really going through a tough time recently.

‘This is very common in the Premier League because it is a very tough league. I have enormous respect for Mikel and for Arsenal. They have a quality set of players and this is the team I’m preparing for on Boxing Day. ‘
