Although honey is a health elixir, it is also a commonly used ingredient in many dishes and has many buyers. However, according to some beliefs, honey is a food that should never be exposed to heat, or cooked, which could potentially become toxic.
We also recently found one such social media post, which talks about the one food people don’t have to order while eating from the outside, warning people of the nasty negative effects.
According to a recent post on the Internet, the honey and chili potato, which is a popular appetizer served in Indian and Asian restaurants, could be bad for our health.
The post also testifies that Ayurvedic beliefs suggest that honey should never be heated, as it can become toxic and induce harmful problems for the body and be the root cause of several diseases.
The post, which has received a lot of support on the Internet, also suggests that even modern science never suggests cooking honey. But is there any truth behind this statement?
We asked two nutritionists to rate the same:
Honey is often used as a sugar substitute and contains fewer calories and better health benefits. However, it is always said that you need to be a little careful before consuming honey as it is. As a rule, honey should never be pasteurized or cooked before being purchased. Some also state that honey should never be heated or added to extremely hot milk or water, as it can ruin its digestive properties and make it unsafe for consumption.
According to Ayurvedic physician Dr Deepa Apte, there is a strong reason why honey is the most beneficial in its natural, organic form, as cooked or processed honey can become toxic to our body’s defenses. She says,
“Ayurvedic beliefs suggest that honey is best consumed in its natural or raw goodness. Hot or cooked honey has a tendency to cause” ama “in the body, which is a kind of toxic substance that forms when the body faces problems with indigestion. As honey is slowly digested in the body, its properties become similar to those of a poison, which in turn can lead to many different diseases. ”
While Dr. Apte adds that a lot depends on the cooking process and the temperature it is exposed to, reheated honey may not always deliver the same health benefits as in its natural form.
Sheela Krishnaswamy, a consultant in nutrition and wellness, while advising moderate consumption of packaged and processed junk foods adds that honey, in its hot form, can cause digestive upset and even become carcinogenic when exposed to extremely high temperatures.
“Nutritional science says honey becomes toxic when exposed to direct heat and starts killing many natural properties and enzymes that are supposed to help you. Heating honey to more than 140 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 2 hours will cause rapid degradation and decomposition.”
It also adds a word of caution for people who buy honey in stores. “Consumers should be careful about the production and origin of their honey. Much store-bought honey is processed in advance and stored in plastic containers, which are not ideal for use.”
What is the best way to consume honey then?
Honey, without a doubt, is one of the best foods for your body, with its loaded antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. While you have to cut down on calorie-rich foods like chili potatoes, or have it occasionally, honey is best mixed with a glass of warm water or warm milk. Natural honey can also be added as part of salad dressings, tea or coffee, and other desserts.
