Actor Dia Mirza said it’s “unfortunate” to see older men playing characters much younger than them. He said the industry favors the idea of youthful beauty and that Neena Gupta is an “aberration”.
In an interview, Dia said it’s “bizarre” to watch a middle-aged actor cast in front of a teenage counterpart. But this happens, he said, because the industry is male dominated.
Dia told ETimes: “The unfortunate truth is that stories aren’t written for the older female characters as much as for the male ones. It’s even more unfortunate to see an older man playing younger parts. The idea of beauty is always associated with youth. I think that’s why there is a great interest in consuming younger faces. “
He continued: “An aberration would be an actress like Neena Gupta ji. She literally said it out loud more than once: ‘I’m an actress. I love my job. Please choose me. Thankfully, some interesting directors decided to cast her in main parts that were beating her age. But there are a lot of actresses in their middle age who are struggling and not being cast because no stories are being written for them. “
Dia added: “The industry is dominated by men. Older men like to be placed in front of younger women to extend their lifespan. It’s bizarre for an actor over 50 to play alongside a 19-year-old actress. “

Dia, who went from being a beauty queen to an actress, said in a previous interview that her appearance hindered some roles. “I think any stereotypes and preconceived notions are not good. The way I look has been a disadvantage for me in my acting profession many times. I lost a job and I wasn’t cast in a part because I look too good. It’s a strange drawback, “he told the Hindustan Times.
