NEW DELHI: Several states in nation I’m on high alert as 18 other flyers from the UK have tested positive for the Covid19 virus Thursday, bringing the cumulative infections to 47 from Sunday. However, there is still no confirmation that this is the new Covid-19 virus effort recently discovered in the UK.
Of the 18 new cases, seven come from Telangana, five from Kerala, four from Karnataka and one each from Odisha and Assam. Seven people who have returned from the UK to Telangana in the past month have tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.

Their samples have now been sent to the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) for genome sequencing to find out whether they are affected by the existing strain of the virus or by the recently mutated and highly infectious UK variant. Sources told TOI that state health officials have entered a state of maximum alert and are aggressively monitoring the contacts of those who tested positive.
“The seven patients were held in solitary confinement in various hospitals, separated from other patients with Covid-19,” said a health department official.
The coronavirus strain has not yet been analyzed. A returnee said passengers were not properly tested before boarding the flight in the UK or after arriving in India.
