Over a quarter of Delhi’s population has been identified as belonging to the three “priority groups” who will first receive a coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccine after one is approved by the central government.
Delhi Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced Thursday that the government has identified 5.1 million people who will be given the vaccine in the first phase in Delhi.
“Our health workers such as doctors, nurses, paramedics and so on will be the first to receive the vaccine in Delhi. We have identified 300,000 healthcare workers who will be vaccinated, ”Kejriwal said at a news conference.
“Next will be frontline workers which include police, civil protection volunteers and municipal workers. There are 600,000 of these people. The third category is those who are 50 or older and those under 50 who have comorbid conditions. There are 4.2 million people in the third category, “he said.
The three priority groups were recommended by the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for Covid-19 (NEGVAC). Across the country, nearly 300 million people in the three categories will receive the vaccine first.
The Delhi government began collecting data on 13 categories of health workers in October. At first, the government asked more than 1,200 hospitals and nursing homes in the city-state – both government and private – to submit a list of their employees.
“A comprehensive list of more than 3,000 doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, administrative, health and safety personnel working in the hospital has been sent to the government for the vaccine. All of them will be able to receive the vaccine. If they want; they can also refuse it, “said a senior administration official at Lok Nayak Hospital who requested anonymity.
The government has also asked the Indian Medical Association to share a list of its registered members to identify those who work in independent clinics and health centers. Subsequently, the government published an announcement asking all clinics, including AYUSH and dental facilities, to register their staff on a government portal.
For the list of frontline workers, in addition to the categories mentioned by the Center such as police forces and municipal workers, the government of Delhi also identified departments such as electricity and water services whose employees were included in the second priority list . Organizations were asked to send information about their staff to the government.
The Delhi government is currently uploading all of this information to the centralized digital platform called CoWIN. It is an end-to-end digital network that will help register those eligible for a vaccine, track those who have been vaccinated, create a vaccination schedule, and monitor resource availability in real time.
For people over the age of 50 and those under 50 with comorbidities, the government used electoral rolls and data collected during door-to-door polls to actively identify Covid-19 cases in November-December. .
“Older people and those with comorbidities are at a higher risk of developing severe Covid-19, so most of the government’s initiatives have been aimed at them. The door-to-door survey that was conducted in November has already ensured that we have a list of these vulnerable people and now our inspectors are working to update it, “a senior New Delhi district official said, requesting anonymity.
In addition to that, the central government will also launch a mobile app linked to the CoWIN platform that will allow people to register for the shots on their own.
